Prayer Before Worship

Heavenly Father, send Your Holy Spirit on us through the Means of Grace, so that confessing our sins, we rely not on ourselves but on Jesus Christ alone, and we grow up in all things into maturity in faith and witness. Through us may more sinners be brought into fellowship in Christ’s Body, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Do you wish you had more? Do you wish you were more? People are always striving to be “top of the heap,” as Frank Sinatra put it. Even more, people like to let others know they are “top of the heap.” St. Paul went to the city of Corinth where bragging about status was an art form. But Paul wrote to them, “God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are…” (1 Corinthians 1:28). Jesus gave up all to save you, and calls you to follow in His footsteps of humility. The way Up, is Down.
